Active individuals, ranging from the seasoned athlete to the weekend warrior, may experience reoccurring heel pain due to their physical lifestyle. Pain and soreness often occurs along the heel and is aggravated after prolonged activity such as running, tennis, and even standing in the workplace. A common cause for the inflammation is usually over-pronation of the foot. This occurs when weight is transferred from the heel to the forefoot causing the foot to roll inward. If left untreated, it can lead to certain syndromes such as plantar fasciitis or achilles tendinitis.
There are numerous things a person can do to avoid heel pain. Prior to rigorous activity, one should perform a dynamic warm-up followed by stretching of tight muscles. Faulty footwear is another factor that one can change fairly easily. Buying a shoe with adequate arch support will prevent the foot from collapsing in. Finally, rest is key. Taking time for recovery after intense workouts will decrease the likelihood of heel pain.
