If you are suffering from biceps tendinitis this means the main tendon that is attached to the uppermost section of the bicep muscle to your shoulder has become inflamed.

Symptoms of Biceps Tendinitis

The most common occurrence with biceps tendinitis is shoulder pain.  Patients report that an intense pain is often felt on the front and top locations of the shoulder. Patients with biceps tendinitis report pain when participating in activities that require the hands to go over their head, common in many sports. Some patients report a feeling of general weakness in their entire arm.

What Causes Biceps Tendinitis?

Engaging in activities that involve heavy repetitive or continuous should action can cause the tendon to become inflamed.  Age is a factor in the development of biceps tendonitis.  Years of normal wear and tear of the biceps can cause inflammation. Falls or other types of injuries that directly affect the shoulder can cause biceps tendonitis.  Biceps tendinitis can also present in conjunction with other common shoulder issues.

These issues include:

  • Arthritis in the shoulder
  • Rotator cuff tendon damage
  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Tears in the glenoid labrum
  • Shoulder impingement

How to Treat Biceps Tendinitis

The first thing to do after receiving a diagnosis of biceps tendinitis is to cease all activity that engages the shoulder.  Rest is of utmost importance for the healing process.  Rest the shoulder as much as possible as this is crucial for a speedy recovery.

The use of anti-inflammatory over the counter medicine is also recommended to help relieve pain associated with biceps tendinitis. Ice packs can be used many times per day to help relieve pain and swelling.  Apply ice packs for 20 minutes at a time.  Do not apply ice directly on your skin.
