Bursitis Physical Therapy

Bursitis Overview

Bursitis is the swelling of the bursa.   This condition can be quite painful. The bursa is a sac that is filled with a liquefied substance.  This sac is located between tissues such as muscles, skin, tendons, and bones.

Causes of Bursitis

The most common cause of bursitis is due to repetitive minor impact or from a serious accident.  Age can also be a determining factor in the development of bursitis.  As our bodies age, our tendons are less capable of handling normal stress and are easier to tear.  Certain activities can increase the risk for bursitis.

These activities include:

  • Painting
  • Softball
  • Basketball
  • Gardening
  • Raking
  • Shoveling
  • Golf
  • Skiing
  • Tennis
  • Laying carpet or tile
  • Prolonged sitting

Body Parts Affected by Bursitis

Bursitis can affect the knees, shoulders, hips, Achilles tendon, and the elbow

Symptoms of Bursitis

The most common indicator of bursitis is pain.  The pain can present gradually or suddenly with bursitis.  The affected area may also appear red and swollen.

If any of these symptoms are occurring, it is time to call the doctor.

  • Joint pain
  • Reoccurring and/or constant pain
  • Bruises
  • Rash
  • Redness
  • Intense shooting pain

Diagnosis of Bursitis

The doctor will perform a physical exam.  During the exam, the doctor will apply pressure on the affected area to determine if a bursa is causing the pain.  The doctor will also ask a series of questions regarding your lifestyle and line of work.

Doctors can usually diagnose bursitis based on the physical exam.  You could require further testing for an accurate diagnosis.  If this is the case, the doctor may order blood tests or an MRI.
